The ShortCut macro

This month we explore the ShortCut macro and how to launch programs, open dialog boxes, and execute menu commands directly from a Help file. You can also launch spreadsheet files, open word processing documents, or display a PowerPoint presentation directly from a Help file using the powerful Shortcut macro.

You may have seen the Shortcut macro in Microsoft Office 95's Help file. Microsoft used the macro extensively to allow users to execute specific commands from the Help file. An example of this type of Help topic follows.

As Help authors, our job is to deliver information to our users fast, so they can get back to work. A demonstration can eliminate volumes of detailed steps, and get the point across faster. Of course, the ShortCut macro will never replace written instructions, however it can provide great visual links to common tasks.
