Topic Templates are a special project file used to create boilerplate text for new topics; they can also be used to apply header and footer information to existing topics.
Topic templates use the .HTT extension.
Topic templates can be used to standardize the appearance of HTML topics. For example, you can create a table.hht template, and for each topic created from the template, it will contain identical tables that use the same formatting and appearance options.
In addition, topic templates can standardized the look of all newly created Overview, Task, Reference, and Context Sensitive Help topics. Simply create a template for each category of topic in your Help system, and as you create new topics, simply choose the appropriate template.
Once you have created the bulk of your topics using topic templates, you can create and apply a Header and Footer template to standardize the headers and footers for all topics.
In addition, you can build Header and Footer layers. By layers, I mean you can create several versions of the Header and Footer templates, going from common information found on all topics (such as a copyright message), to more specific information, such as a copyright message and a print button.
Topic templates save you time when creating new topics, and eliminate the need to retype standardized information each time you create a topic.
Topic templates should be designed before creating the bulk of your Help topics because once the topic is created from a template, the body of the topic cannot be updated by modifying the template file.
