Adding HTML Help Workshop as an Editor

Microsoft's HTML Help Workshop provides additional commands for ActiveX controls that RoboHelp does not support. All Help authors should have the commands and resources of the HTML Help Workshop available while authoring Help systems; most of the time it won't be needed, but the Workshop is the ultimate resource for HTML Help issues.

Some things the HTML Help Workshop lets you do that RoboHelp does not support:

·         Related Topics controls can launch topics into predefined secondary windows.

·         Shortcuts controls let you add programming commands to send messages to applications.

In the next exercise, you add the HTML Help Workshop to the list of RoboHelp HTML Editors. You must have the Help Workshop installed on your computer before adding the editor.

1.      Download and install the HTML Help Workshop.
Here's a link at Microsoft for the HTML Help Workshop.

2.      Next, in RoboHelp HTML Version 9 and later, choose Tools: Options: HTML Editors.

3.      Click Add and type HTML Help Workshop.

4.      Click the browse (...) button and navigate to:
C:\Program Files\HTML Help Workshop

5.      Select and Open HCW.EXE.

6.      Click OK.
Two commands available when using HTML Editors is the New Topic With command

And Edit With

Using HTML Help Workshop to Add ActiveX controls

1.      Locate any topic on the Project tab where you want to create an ActiveX control under HTML Files.

2.      Right click the topic and choose Edit With: HTML Help Workshop.

3.      Click Yes.

Create a Shortcut control with HTML Help Workshop

The HTML Help Workshop is a pure HTML editor.  There's no WYSIWYG mode. You must locate the appropriate tags and text, and you should always add an opening paragraph <p> tag where you want to begin a new line.

1.      Scroll to the end of the document.

2.      On a blank line in the <BODY> section type an opening paragraph <p> tag.

3.      On the toolbar locate and click the HTML Help ActiveX Control button.
You may notice a few additional controls not supported by RoboHelp.

4.      Select Shortcut and click Next twice.

5.      In Button Options, type open Notepad.

6.      In Shortcut add the following options.

Note that these parameters are the ones RoboHelp has difficulty synchronizing when you copy and paste a button.

7.      Click Next, Next, and Finish.
Also note the additional parameters available.  RoboHelp does not support additional parameters.

8.      When finished your screen should look like:

9.      Click Save and Close the Help Workshop.
You are returned to RoboHelp.

That's it for this month/year.

Have a great holiday season.
